A campaign has its own status separate from each notification's Status switch. Both matter. This guide explains what each campaign status means and how it affects linked notifications.
New to campaigns? Start with What Are Campaigns?.
Two switches, both important
For a linked notification to appear on your site, all of these must be true:
| Layer | Where to set it | Must be |
|---|---|---|
| Notification Status | Notification list or editor | On |
| Campaign active | Campaign editor or list toggle | On (Active) |
| Campaign schedule | Campaign start/end dates | Current time inside the window (or no dates set) |
| Display rules and timing | Notification editor tabs | Rules pass for this visitor and page |
Turning a campaign off blocks every linked notification at once, even if each notification's Status is still on.
See Understanding Notification Status for the notification side.
Campaign status badges
On Notifal → Campaigns, the Status column shows one badge per campaign:
| Badge | Meaning | Can you click to toggle? |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Campaign is on and running inside its schedule window | Yes , switches to Paused |
| Paused | You turned the campaign off manually | Yes , switches to Active |
| Scheduled | Campaign is on, but the start date is still in the future | No |
| Ended | The end date has passed | No |
| Inactive | Campaign is not published (for example in trash) | No |
Click Active or Paused in the list to flip the campaign without opening the editor. A short loading state appears, then the badge updates.
For Scheduled and Ended, open the campaign editor to change dates or read the ended banner.
What happens when you pause a campaign
When you set Campaign active to off, or click Active to pause from the list:
- Every linked notification stops showing on the front end
- Each notification keeps its own Status, design, and settings
- Unlinking is not required , turn the campaign back on to resume
Use pause when you need to stop a sale immediately without editing every notification.
What happens when a campaign is scheduled
If Campaign active is on but the start date is in the future:
- The list shows Scheduled
- Linked notifications with Status on still do not show until the start moment arrives
- After the start time passes, the badge becomes Active (if still within the end date)
No extra action is needed. Notifal checks the schedule on each page load.
What happens when a campaign ends
When the end date passes:
- The list shows Ended
- Linked notifications stop showing even if Status is on and the campaign toggle is still on
- Notifal marks the campaign ended automatically (about once per hour). See Campaign Expiry and Auto-Deactivation
To run the same campaign again, open the editor, set a new future end date (or clear and reset dates), and save. A banner on ended campaigns explains this.
Linking and unlinking notifications
From the campaign editor:
- Search and add notifications in the picker
- Remove rows from Selected notifications
- Save to apply links
From a notification:
- General tab → Campaign dropdown → pick a campaign or No Campaign
When you unlink:
- The notification keeps all other settings
- Its Timing tab schedule becomes available again (Enable Schedule)
See Linking a Notification to a Campaign.
Deleting a campaign moves it to trash and unlinks all notifications automatically.
Common situations
"My notification is on but nothing shows"
Check in order:
- Is the notification Status on?
- Is the campaign Active (not Paused, Scheduled, or Ended)?
- Is today inside the campaign start/end window?
- Do display rules and show timing allow it on this page?
"I paused the campaign but one notification still shows"
Another notification with the same design may not be linked to that campaign. Open the notification General tab and confirm the Campaign dropdown.
"I want only one notification off during a sale"
Pause affects the whole campaign. Unlink that one notification or turn its Status off instead.
