Display Rules

Category Display Rules (Pro)

2 min read

Categories display rules (Pro) target category archive pages, not single posts or products. For individual product or post pages, use Page and Post Targeting.

Requires Notifal Pro. Combine multiple rules with Multiple Display Rules with AND/OR (Pro).

What this rule matches

Page typeMatched by Categories rule?
Category archive (blog)Yes
Product category archive (WooCommerce)Yes
Single blog postNo (use Posts or Post Type rule)
Single product pageNo (use Products rule)

Category rule modes

ModeResult
All category archivesAny category or product category archive for the post types you scope
Only specific categoriesOnly the categories you select
All exceptAll category archives except the ones you exclude

You can also limit which post types the rule cares about (posts, products, or custom types linked to that taxonomy).

Examples

Blog category promo: Only specific → pick "Tutorials" → show a newsletter signup on that archive only.

Store-wide category banners: All category archives → post types include Product → show a shipping info bar on every product category page.

Exclude one category: All except → exclude "Clearance" → show everywhere else in the catalog archives.

Categories rule vs Smart Targeting

FeaturePurpose
Category display ruleControl if the notification appears on archive URLs
Smart TargetingNarrow dynamic content to match the current page or archive

They work well together: use a Categories rule to show on fashion archives, and Smart Targeting so product names in the toast match that category. See Smart Targeting (Pro).
