Content source filters narrow the pool of products, orders, posts, or other items Notifal can pick from. Without filters, pools can be very large. With filters, you target exactly the stories you want to tell.
Start with What Is Content Source?.
Where to set filters
Content Source tab → after template analysis → restrictions for each detected tag group.
You can add multiple conditions per pool and choose AND or OR logic between them when Pro is active (same idea as display rules).
Product filter types
| Filter | Use for |
|---|---|
| Categories | Only products in selected categories |
| Specific products | Hand-picked catalog items |
| On sale | Sale social proof |
| Featured | Highlighted catalog products |
| Custom meta | Brand, stock flag, or other product meta |
| Date range | New arrivals in the last X days |
| Cart | Products from visitor's cart (see Cart-Based Content Source) |
Order filter types
| Filter | Use for |
|---|---|
| Order status | Real paid orders only |
| Date range | Fresh social proof |
| Products in order | Orders containing certain items |
| Custom meta | Wholesale, subscription, or custom flags |
| Multiple conditions | Strict pools for niche stores |
See Order Pool Content Source.
Post, page, and user filters
Posts and pages support category, date, specific items, and custom meta filters.
User pools support role, date, and meta restrictions. See Post, Page, and User Pools.
AND vs OR logic
| Logic | Pool includes items that... |
|---|---|
| OR | Match any condition |
| AND | Match all conditions |
Example (products): Category = Shoes AND On sale = only discounted shoes.
Smart Targeting stacks on top
Filters define your base pool. Smart Targeting (Pro) further narrows to the current page when enabled.
Troubleshooting empty pools
If a dynamic notification never appears on the frontend, the content pool may be empty:
- Loosen filters (wider date range, more statuses)
- Check WooCommerce has matching products/orders
- Turn on Smart Targeting fallback if contextual matches fail
- Enable Show duplicate source if the pool is small
