Smart Targeting (Pro) narrows your content source pool to match the page the visitor is on. A product page can show that product (or related items). A category archive can show items from that category.
Requires Notifal Pro and a template with dynamic tags (not page-only tags). See What Is Content Source?.
What it does
Smart Targeting adds to your existing filters. It does not replace them.
Example: You filter products to "On sale" AND Smart Targeting is ON on a category archive. Notifal shows on-sale products from that category.
Where it applies
| Page type | Smart Targeting |
|---|---|
| Single product, post, or custom post | Yes |
| Category or taxonomy archive | Yes |
| Regular WordPress pages (About, Contact) | No (use filters only) |
| Home, shop index, cart, checkout | Ignored (uses normal filters) |
Post type archive listings (/events/) | Ignored |
Main settings
Enable Smart Targeting on the Content Source tab (visible when your template supports it).
Category depth level
Controls how far Notifal widens beyond the current item:
| Level | Behavior |
|---|---|
| 0 | Current product/post/term only. If nothing matches and fallback is off, notification may not show. |
| 1 | Direct assigned category or term |
| 2 to 10 | Include parent categories or page hierarchy upward |
Fallback
When ON, if no contextual match is found, Notifal falls back to your base content source filters (wider pool).
When OFF, a failed contextual match can hide the notification on that page.
Phases (how it searches)
On single pages:
- Current , the item being viewed
- Context , related taxonomy or hierarchy (skipped when depth is 0)
- Fallback , optional wider pool
On archive pages:
- Context , current archive term
- Fallback , optional
When Smart Targeting is hidden
Notifal hides Smart Targeting controls if your template uses page tags only (no product/post/order context to target).
Works with Retrigger
When Allow Re-trigger After Hide is ON, Smart Targeting can rotate through different items in the contextual pool on the same page. See Retrigger Variants.
